The world has come a long way since the first computer was ever built. The dreams of some of this century’s most prominent minds have come true and there is a computer in almost every home in the world. Connecting people has become far easier, through the use of mobile and wireless technology, as well as interconnected devices that spread to the farthest corners of the planet.
And since the World Wide Web is a melting pot of cultures, personalities and ideas, it has become the very description of what avant-garde means in the 21st century. As a definition, the term avant guarde is used to describe a series of people, object or manifestations that are out of the ordinary, particularly innovative and overall brilliant through uniqueness and audacity. Internet avant-garde is one way of looking for and finding things that match that description.
There are so many things that the World Wide Web has brought us, and the majority of those things have been controversial from the start. The general opinion a few decades ago was that connecting the world could not be possible or could be a bad idea, but today we see that it is one of the most used tools of mankind.
We use the internet every day, at home, at work or at school. We can use it to gather information, communicate with each other, stay in touch, shop for clothes and many other items, procure medicine and pay our bills. Each one of these ideas was avant guarde in the beginning and some still consider them to be. There are many years to come and a lot of improvements to be made, but the WWW will remain the world’s most avant-garde project ever.
